Project description
The grazing of dairy cows has a long tradition in Schleswig-Holstein and characterises the landscape in many places. Thanks to the temperate climate and vast grassland areas, the federal state offers good conditions for a cow-friendly and resource-saving form of husbandry. In addition to the positive effects on animal health and welfare, many consumers value pasture farming as a particularly natural form of milk production.
The aim of the project was to increase the efficiency of pasture farms in Schleswig-Holstein by improving pasture management. To this end, two proven innovations from Ireland - the ‘Grashopper’ (Rising Plate Meter) grass growth meter and the ‘PastureBase Ireland’ decision support system - were to be adapted and transferred to (northern) German conditions with the support of Irish colleagues. The development of a pasture app is also planned.
Further information and detailed descriptions of the above-mentioned methods can be found in the following technical articles.
